Kiwanis Club helps NJ Clean Community program by sprucing up Ogden Street in Chatham Borough

Six Chatham-Madison Kiwanis members, three CHS Key Club members and a pet worked together to remove many bags of debris from Ogden Street near the Chatham Borough Recycling Center. Nearby walkways were also cleaned up. This May 18, 2013 activity was carried out as part of the New Jersey Clean Community program.

Kiwanis Cleans up Ogden Street in Chatham

On December 6, 2012 the Chatham-Madison Kiwanis Club cleaned debris from the shoulder of Ogden Street in Chatham Borough.  Six members shown in the photo arrived at 8:30 AM and filled bags with bottles, cans, cigarette boxes, and other items thrown there by passersby. Temperature was below freezing when they started but the hard work warmed everyone up. This was part of the New Jersey Clean Communities Program.

Announcements: Kiwanis November 22 Meeting

Karen Shippey announced that last weekend’s Nut Sales at the Supermarkets went very well and we are about out of all bagged nuts. There are still plenty of nuts in gift tins: deluxe mixed nuts, cashews and kiwis. She asked all members to accelerate their sale of these items. We are about at the breakeven point. Next, we need to sell all the remaining nuts so we will have funds to put into scholarships and youth programs.

Gary Arnesen reported that the clean-up of the Passaic River Trail near Shepard Kollock Park in Chatham Borough went very well. Because of the storms this year, the work was pretty tough. He thanked all the participants. Click here to see photos on Chatham Patch.

Joan May reminded everyone about the November 25 Madison Christmas Day parade. We will gather in the Ambulance Corps parking lot starting at 5:00 pm. Club members are invited to meet Joan at Charlie Brown’s after the parade. Click here to view the Madison Patch article about the parade. Joan also reminded everyone to help with “Breakfast with Santa” to be held on December 3.

Betty Anne Keat told members that the Chatham Middle School is selling Entertainment Books and asked members to buy one.

Kiwanians help clean Passaic River Trail in Chatham Borough on November 19

On Saturday November 19, members of Kiwanis, Chatham DPW and the CHS Key Club President helped clean up the trail that starts at Shephard Kollock Park and goes along the beautiful Passaic River. Click here to see more photos on Chatham Patch.

Kiwanis May 25 Chatham Clean-up

On May 25, six members of Chatham-Madison Kiwanis removed litter from the Ogden St. area of Chatham Borough. Announcements - March 1 Kiwanis Meeting

The Chatham High School Key Club is holding a Restaurant Night fund-raiser to benefit the Children’s Specialized Hospital on Thursday, March 10 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at Friendly’s Restaurant in New Providence (75 South Street). Betty Anne announced that Ten percent of customers’ bills will be donated to the Hospital. You can do take-out as well as eat-in. Alan Robertson reported that Fish and Chips placemat adds are doing fine. Other preparations are going fine. Gary Arnesen reported that Chatham Boro clean-up will be rescheduled from April to May or later in the year. Nancy invited members to the 7:30 PM April 12 Awards Recognition Reception to be held at Charlie Brown’s. Checks will be given to Benevolence recipients and a special Community Aid Award will be given to someone selected by Kiwanis. Members are requested to nominate candidates.  Rich gave a quick update on the successful Wine-Tasting event. He asked for feedback on the event. Members were asked to submit any last minute bills within the next two weeks. A very high percent of members participated in the event. Dick noted that the Wine-Tasting was a great Kiwanis Team event. 

February 15 Kiwanis Meeting Announcements

Betty Anne announced that the CHS Key Club will meet at 7:30 PM on 2/15/11 in the cafeteria.  Rich reported on the Wine-Tasting, saying that Karen still needs a couple of volunteers to help with the tricky trays. He passed a sign-up sheet around. Dick reminded members that the February Board Meeting starts after the program. Alan handed out Fish and Chips tickets to members. Gary discussed the Chatham Borough spring clean-up, which will be scheduled for April 20.

Kiwanis Ogden Street Spring Cleaning

On May 20, 2010, a bright sunny day, 7 members of the Kiwanis Club of Chatham and Madison turned out to remove litter from the roadway and path around Ogden St. and Summit Ave. The area spruced up is near the Chatham Borough Recycling center next to the railroad tracks. May 11 Kiwanis Meeting at Broccolini’s - Announcements

The Luncheon meeting was held at Broccolini’s in Madison. The photo shows members Melanie, Betty Anne, Nancy and Mary Anne. Bob introduced guest Stu, who is interested in joining the club. Nancy introduced guest John. Starting at the Stanley Park picnic next week, the dress code for meetings is casual until we go back to more formal attire at the installation dinner.

Mary Anne passed around signup sheets for people to help out at the Stanley Park picnic next Tuesday and the Rotary-Kiwanis picnic on June 15. Gary passed around the signup sheet for May 20, 9:00 am Ogden St. area cleanup as part of NJ Clean Community program. It will only take about an hour to do the work. A map is available and it will be emailed to members. Nancy asked for orders for supermarket gift certificates. Tom asked members to fill out an interclub event form showing names of our members and where the event is held. This is needed to receive credit for attending the event.

Saturday is the Cole Park yard sale. Set-up people have to be there at 7:00 am. Tables will be picked up and delivered Thursday and Friday by Doug and Sam. Alan will assign sellers to table spaces identified using stakes supplied by Dick.

Election of next year’s officers began by reading names of all nominees. The members in attendance elected nominees by voice vote. The list of next year’s officers is shown in the Blog officers’ page.

Cole Park May Day in Madison – 2010

On May 1, Kiwanis participated in May Day in Madison by sprucing up Cole Park. Cole Park is located on Greenwood Ave. and was given to the Borough of Madison by Howard Grant Cole on July 27, 1918 in loving memory of his wife, Louise Cole. Early in the morning on Saturday, 11 Kiwanis members, four Madison High School Key Club members and about 15 volunteers from St. Vincent the Martyr School (Girl Scouts and others) removed weeds from around bushes and trees – then distribute a huge pile of mulch to all the garden sites. Everyone had a lot of fun, even though temperature was over 80 when we finished, about 10:30am.

Announcements for April 27 Breakfast Meeting

President Rich announced at the April 27 meeting that Joan came through her knee surgery, is in rehab at RIM and is doing well. Drew Circle K Club is having a textbook drive and a flyer is available on the club website. Drew will take encyclopedias and other large books, which can be dropped off at many locations on campus. Numbered stakes were made by Dick Ligertwood for the May 15 Yard Sale. Rich and John will place the 24 stakes on table sites the night before the sale. About a dozen table spaces have been sold so far. The sign-up sheet for the Sale was circulated again. Rich reported that the Church Service and Brunch was great and recommend that more people come next year. Brunch was held in a very nice semi-private room at Winberie’s. Rich also showed a plaque from Madison Little League of members of the Kiwanis team. Charlie Brown’s will be asked to mount the plaque in the Kiwanis meeting room.

Jerry reminded all that the Madison May Day Cole Park clean-up will be next Saturday from 8:00am to 12:00pm. Members should bring their own tools but some may be provided by Madison. After the meeting, AD said she will pick up T-shirts and available tools on the Thursday before the event.

Nancy Boucher announced the names of the nominees for 2010-2011 officers of the club. Look at the list in the page in the right margin of this Blog. Joan May will be the new Vice President and the three 2013 Class Elected Directors are Douglas Bryant, Karen Schwartz and Melanie Sze. Per our club by-laws, we announce the slate at the last meeting of April. Nominations from the floor are accepted at the next meeting on May 4. Members vote on the slate at the second meeting in May, which is May 11. The Secretary position is filled by the Board at a later time.
