Kiwanis November 25 Program: Byron Arison presented “My personal experiences on The Manhattan Project: The Making of the Atomic Bomb.”

Byron Arison (right in the photo) spoke at the November 25 luncheon meeting of Kiwanis held at Charlie Brown’s in Chatham Township. On the left in the photo is his wife, Arlene Peterson.

In his talk, Byron told how, after his graduation from the University of Michigan in 1943 with a Bachelor of Science degree, he was immediately hired by DuPont as a chemist at the TNT plant in Kankakee, Ill. He was transferred first in March of 1944 to the Manhattan Project at the University of Chicago and then in October to the Hanford Engineering Works at Hanford, Washington. During this period, he was part of a group that installed uranium into one of the reactors designed for the production of plutonium.

The audience was fascinated by this account of that critical period of time at the close of the Second World War. After a brisk Q&A session, everyone enthusiastically applauded this entertaining presentation.

Kiwanis November 11 Meeting Program: Ron Nicola, lawyer and public defender presented an overview and assessment of the Public Defender System.

Ron Nicola, public defender in several New Jersey municipalities spoke to Kiwanis about the Public Defender System. Ron (right in the photo) is a resident of Chatham and practices law in Chatham. He was introduced by Kiwanian Caesar on the left.

The talk provided a fascinating look into the operation of the New Jersey Public Defender System. After a brisk question and answer session, the audience enthusiastically applauded this informative talk.

Kiwanis November 4 Meeting Program: Joe Gonsalves, Senior Director of Healthy Living talked about adult programs at the Madison Area YMCA

Joe Gonsalves, Senior Director of Healthy Living, spoke at the November 4 Kiwanis luncheon meeting. Kiwanis September 30 Meeting Program: Valerie Tomaro from Tomaro Honey in Chatham gave a presentation about honeybees and bee keeping.

She was introduced by John Eyre (right in photo), President of Chatham-Madison Kiwanis. Valerie and her husband manage a bee keeping business in Chatham.

Valerie gave a very interesting talk about behavior of honeybees, how they are raised, and many other topics. They sell products made from the honey and honey combs. They give talks to local schools and other groups. The audience enthusiastically applauded this entertaining presentation about a “green” local business.

Kiwanis September 9 Meeting Program: Len Resto presented the history of the Morris & Essex Railroad running through Chatham and how it affected Chatham development

Kiwanis August 19 Meeting Program: Stu Shippey, a licensed Extra Amateur Radio Operator (Call Letters: KA2HZP) presented "What is a Ham? - How they are involved in emergencies and other tidbits."

Kiwanian Stu Shippey (right in photo), licensed Extra Amateur Radio Operator (KA2HZP) gave a fascinating presentation titled "What is a Ham? - How they are involved in emergencies and other tidbits" at the August 19, 2014 Kiwanis meeting. He was introduced by his wife Karen (left in photo).

Stu showed a PowerPoint presentation with links to videos, log files and other interesting items. He set up interesting posters and demonstrated portable amateur radios, powered by a large battery. He covered the history of radio using a YouTube video narrated by Walter Cronkite.

Stu jumped back into his early hobby of amateur radio after visiting the Chatham Marconi Maritime Center on Cape Cod in Massachusetts. He showed a video titled “ARRL at 100: A Century of Ham Radio”. Click here to see the full-length video.

Kiwanis July 15 Meeting Program: The Chatham Borough Police spoke about "Drugs in the Chatham Area, What to Look Out For"

Chatham Borough Police Sargent Ralph Colatrella and Detectives Bryan Colatrella and Dan Walsh (left to right in above photo) were introduced by John Eyre (far right in photo) at the July 15 Kiwanis breakfast meeting held at Charlie Brown’s Restaurant.  The policemen spoke about “Drugs in the Chatham Area, What to Look Out For”.

The Chatham area does not have a major problem with drug usage; however, it is a serious situation which requires vigilance and preventive activities in the community. The speakers gave a comprehensive overview of the present situation, including a description of the types of drugs.

After an active question and answer period, the audience applauded the fine work of the speakers and the entire Chatham Police Department.

Kiwanis July 8 Meeting Program: Marilyn Wittlinger spoke on Louis Comfort Tiffany

Marilyn Wittlinger, left in photo, spoke on Louis Comfort Tiffany at the Kiwanis luncheon meeting held on July 8 at Charlie Brown’s Restaurant. She was introduced by John Eyre, right in photo, President of the Chatham-Madison Kiwanis Club.

Last February, she visited the Morse Museum in Winter Park Florida, where she viewed an extensive display of Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933) artwork.  Tiffany was an American artist and designer who worked in the decorative arts and is best known for his work with stained glass.

Marilyn presented a delightful slide show showing many pieces of beautiful art. She took the audience through the creative life of Tiffany which included many intriguing stories. Everyone enthusiastically applauded the educational and entertaining program.

Kiwanis June 24 Meeting Program: Tom Fountain, CTO of Pneuron Corporation, spoke about Entrepreneurial Accelerators.

Tom made reference to a book titled “The World is Flat” written by Tom Friedman, foreign affairs columnist for the New York Times. The book shows how technology changes in the late 80s and the 90s made it much easier to conduct business. Tom also handed out a sheet showing how Ideas/Markets, Talent, Capital and Resources make up Entrepreneurial Accelerators.

Tom gave a fascinating description of how business is conducted today using advanced technology. After an active Question and Answer session, the audience enthusiastically applauded this enlightening and entertaining presentation.

Kiwanis November 19 Meeting Program: Susan Fountain spoke on her experiences as a foster parent.

Susan Fountain (left) was introduced by Caesar Sweitzer at the November 19 Kiwanis Breakfast meeting held at Charlie Brown’s in Chatham Twp. In three years, Susan has served as foster parent for four different babies for periods ranging from one day to two months. Susan has three daughters and lives with them and her husband Tom in Chatham.

She addressed several items: why she served as foster parent, what concerns she had going into the process, what screening and training were needed to be eligible, how the program actually works and quality of the experience.

Susan described how her family received much more than they gave in carrying for their foster children. The audience enthusiastically applauded her spellbinding program.

Kiwanis October 29 Meeting Program: Angela McCall-Brown from the Stroke Center at Overlook Medical Center spoke on "Stroke: Managing your Risk”

Angela McCall-Brown (left in photo) from the Stroke Center at Overlook Medical Center spoke on "Stroke: Managing your Risk” at the October 29 Kiwanis luncheon. Nancy Boucher (right) introduced her.

Angela said that Overlook treats almost 900 strokes per year, ages 17 through 101. She noted that we need to know our risks factors for stroke so we can try to control the risks. Risk factors include age, gender, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, etc.

It is possible to modify some risk factors and Angela described actions that can be taken to reduce the chance of having a stroke. About 60 percent of strokes are the result of high blood pressure so blood pressure should be brought under control. Treatment of modifiable risk factors should be taken very seriously.

Angela handed out a refrigerator magnet listing Stroke warning signs and symptoms. She emphasized the importance of immediate treatment. Call 911 if any of them start.

Kiwanis October 22 Meeting: Stephanie Fellippello presented program "Suggestions on Attracting Builders Club & Key Club Parents to Join Our Family".

Stephanie Fellippello (left in photo) made a presentation to the Chatham-Madison Kiwanis Club at Charlie Brown’s in Chatham Township. She was introduced by Sharon Johnson, President-Elect of the club. Stephanie made suggestions for improving the club. These were warmly received by the members, who enthusiastically applauded at the end of the program.

Katie Olson, Director of Development at Cornerstone Family Programs spoke on their recent reorganization at the August 13 Kiwanis meeting held at Charlie Brown’s Restaurant in Chatham Township. The service organization previously known as Family Service of Morris County (FSMC) is now known as Cornerstone Family Programs. FSMC merged with another service organization, Morristown Neighborhood House.

FSMC has be in operation for 200 years.
